I have had lobster tails for Thanksgiving and I have had grilled pork roast for the same holiday. My wife loves lemon meringue pie while my favorite is chocolate pudding pie. Neither of us is crazy about turkey. We usually have ham on Christmas, with sweet potatoes and chocolate covered éclairs. It has never entered our minds to do tofu and bean sprouts with carrot juice. Yuk!
Fat is Nature's way of keeping animals alive during hard times. It is the storing of food inside the body. Fat is not unhealthy. Excessive fat causes problems. Lack of fat causes problems. Any extreme causes problems. So if your holiday feast is extreme you are causing a problem.
How large are your portions? How many portions? How much of your plate is filled with the healthier foods and how much is trash? Did you save room for dessert, or stuff it on top? Did you save too much room for desserts and skip over the good food? Were you a responsible cook, host, eater? These are the important parts of holiday feasts. Ask yourself what your responsibilities are during these feasts. Is it to force everyone to eat tofu because you are on a diet because you have little self control? Is it to stuff everyone with way too much crap because you do not want to feel guilty about being overweight? Is it to make sure there are not too many fattening leftovers in your fridge the next morning?
You are the only one responsible for your health once you reach a maturity and educational level that is equal to the average adult. Until then, your parents, grandparents, friends, and others around you, that you respect, will influence your judgment on what is good for you, or bad for you. Those learning's will haunt you for the rest of your life, whether you like it or not. We do not forget easily. Try not to use your childhood as an excuse for your own lack of self control though. Blaming your parents for you being fat, only goes so far, then it is time for you to grow up.
If you are a parent, then it is your responsibility to teach your children how and what to eat, and the holiday season is a tough lesson, but needed. Have the children help with the cooking so they can learn about draining off the fat, and using low calorie ingredients in some of the foods. Teach them how to calculate portions so there is very little leftover pie, but plenty of turkey and vegetables. Show them how to toss a leftover turkey leg in a pot of beans to make a few more healthy meals after freezing. While your at it, have them help with the clearing of the table and washing dishes. Teach them that sitting around with a full belly is not the sign of a healthy attitude. Never bribe them with desserts, instead pay them cash so they can learn the rewards of hard work, and then make them save half the money. Do not let them waste their allowance on candy. On Halloween, show them the benefits of doling out goodies a little at a time to keep them healthy, and keep them in candy for a long time. No extremes! Be responsible.
